Tips And Tricks To Ease Dental Fear

Dental anxiety can manifest in many ways. Some patients suffer from sweaty palms, while others feel a racing heartbeat in their chests. Dental phobia can keep patients from seeking the dental treatment they need. However, it's never too late to address your dental anxiety. At our office, we offer several ways to help you ease your dental anxiety. Listed below are some tips that you can follow to ease your dental anxiety.

Discuss your dental fears with your dentist

Some people feel nervous about their dentist appointment because they don't know what to expect. If you're feeling a little nervous about your upcoming visit, talk to your dentist! Talking with your dentist about your anxiety or fear can help relieve some of your nervousness and help you feel more comfortable and at ease. Let your dentist know that you're nervous so they can work with you to reduce your feelings of fear and anxiety. Your dentist's office may even offer services like sedation dentistry to help you feel more calm and relaxed during your visits. Talk to your dentist about what options are available for you to make your appointments less stressful.

Agree on a signal if pain during treatment becomes unbearable

If you develop extreme fear or anxiety before or during dental treatment, it is best to inform your dentist about your discomfort. Your dentist will most likely suggest some strategies to help you overcome your fear and nervousness. One of the proposed solutions is to set up a signal so the doctor can be alerted immediately if you need to take a break from the treatment.

Aside from using verbal cues, you can also agree upon a signal beforehand. It can be raising your hand to let your doctor know you need a break. This way, you can easily communicate what you are feeling at the moment and how long you can withstand the pain. You can also bring someone you trust to your appointment for support and comfort. This person can distract you while undergoing the treatments and can also comfort you if you start to feel anxious during the visit.

Take a friend or family member with you for emotional support

Taking a friend or family member along for support is a great idea when you're going for dental treatment or a procedure. The presence of your loved ones will help you stay calm and relaxed, especially during the surgical part. They can encourage and motivate you throughout the process. The presence of a close friend or family member will also distract you from the procedure and help you relax.

Bring distractions to occupy your mind during procedures

Distractions occupy your mind and take away the discomfort you feel during a procedure. You can ask your dentist or dental hygienist for some recommendations.
